The UK needs younger players.

The UK needs younger players.

The next time you visit an organ or keyboard club, take a look around you and note how many young faces you see.

You will most likely answer none. Why is this? Well we are convinced that it isn’t just one thing, in fact, it is a mixture. If you look at the whole thing from the viewpoint of a child, you will see what is missing.
Firstly, they need to be seen to be playing something cool - and whilst certain instruments on the market are most certainly cool and have that wow factor, the way they are played can be a big negative. Whilst songs from the war and showtunes were popular many years ago, the whole scene has not moved on. Even I get bored sitting through some concerts listening to Glen Miller songs and marches. If you ask any professional artist, the music played is mostly performed because that is what the audience ask for.

The UK organ scene needs one big shake up if it has any chance of bringing younger musicians into the scene. The more we look at events held by OKEY and they really set the standard. Not only do they cater for all age groups, the way they present the instrument to younger audiences is on a much more professional level. With more and more retired people taking up this instrument, this hobby is in fear of driving younger people away and making it outside the reach of kids.

We need younger players - FACT. None of us are getting younger and there are less and less younger players entering the concert circuit which will eventually leave clubs without new talent. We want to showcase any youngsters who play the organ or keyboard. If you are under the age of 25 we would love to hear from you. Drop us an email.

If you run an organ club or are a teacher - why not leave a comment and tell us what you think of the current state of the keyboard market.
